Electrosurgical Instruments
Electrosurgery is the cutting and coagulation of body tissue using high frequency current. The flow of current is resisted by body tissue and the localised increase in temperature causes thermal destruction of tissue which is medically useful.
Electrosurgical instruments are specialized medical tools used during surgical procedures to cut, coagulate, and ablate tissues using high-frequency electrical current. These instruments come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are used for different types of procedures.
Some common types of electrosurgical instruments include:
- Monopolar electrodes: Monopolar electrodes are used to deliver electrical current to tissues in the body during surgery. They consist of a thin, metal wire that is heated by the electrical current and used to cut or coagulate tissues.
- Bipolar forceps: Bipolar forceps are used to coagulate tissues without the need for a grounding pad. They consist of two metal tips that deliver electrical current to the tissue, effectively sealing blood vessels and reducing bleeding.
- Electrosurgical pencil: An electrosurgical pencil is a handheld device used to control the delivery of electrical current to tissues during surgery. It allows the surgeon to easily adjust the power and frequency of the electrical current, depending on the type of tissue being treated.
- Laparoscopic and arthroscopic electrodes: Laparoscopic and arthroscopic electrodes are used in minimally invasive surgical procedures to deliver electrical current to tissues through a small incision. They are designed to be inserted through a trocar and can be used to cut or coagulate tissues.
- LEEP instruments: LEEP instruments are used in gynecology and obstetrics to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix, vulva, or vagina. They consist of a loop electrode that is heated by the electrical current and used to cut through the abnormal tissue and seal the blood vessels.
Proper training and experience are necessary to use electrosurgical instruments safely and effectively. Healthcare professionals must be familiar with the different types of instruments, their features and capabilities, and the potential risks and complications associated with their use.
