Periotomes are dental instruments used in periodontal surgeries to separate the periodontal ligament from the tooth root during tooth extraction or implant placement procedures. They are typically long, thin, and sharp instruments with a curved or straight tip designed to fit between the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. Periotomes are used to carefully sever the fibers that hold the tooth in place within the socket, minimizing trauma to the surrounding bone and gum tissue. By reducing trauma during tooth extraction or implant placement, the healing process is often faster and more comfortable for the patient.
