Eye specula are medical instruments used to hold the eyelids apart during eye exams, surgeries, or other procedures. They come in various sizes and shapes and are used depending on the type of procedure being performed. The most common types of eye specula are the wire speculum and the solid blade speculum. The wire speculum is made up of two wire loops that fit into the lower and upper eyelids, holding them open. The solid blade speculum, on the other hand, uses two solid blades to hold the eyelids apart. These specula are usually made of stainless steel, and are designed to be sterilized between uses.
